Roseburg/Elkton
2-3 guests, $375
4-6 guests, $700
7-8 guests, $825
Tours also travel to the Umpqua Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) to the South. When a US winery wants to tell you the geographic pedigree of its wine, it uses a tag on its label called an Appellation of Origin. Appellations are defined either by political boundaries, such as the name of a county or state, or by federally-recognized growing regions called American Viticultural Areas (AVA). The Umpqua Valley AVA is bordered to the East by the Cascade Mountains and the West by the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley is cooled by Pacific breezes flowing along the Umpqua River. Vineyards are mostly found below 1,000 feet and are planted to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and a scattering of French American hybrids. The Umpqua Valley provides a great sampling of wines from whites to big and bold reds.
North Willamette Valley
Eola/Amity and Dundee Tours
2-3 guests, $400
4-6 guests, $750
7-8 guests, $950
The North Willamette Valley is home to more than 200 wineries, many of which produce world-class Pinot Noir. I resisted liking Pinots because of they seemed to be such a snooty little grape only consumed by people who spoke in a strange language of bouquet and other fancifulness only to utilize that knowledge to make people feel inferior to them. I don't drive a Bentley and I don't belong to a Country Club but I have learned that everyday people just like me can enjoy them just as much, maybe even more as we get to talk in our regular voice as opposed to the Mr. Howell tone from Gilligan's Island.
Remember this one fact - this is Oregon Pinot, it is different. Meet the winemakers, drink from the barrel, one of my favorite winery owners refers to both Pinot Noirness (definitely a made up term) and how PFC his wine is to the way the old world made it. There are some cool people we want you to meet up North and trust me, more than enough wine along the way to make this a trip you will want to do again and again. It is a bit of a drive up and back but keep in mind that we use a time-machine on the way home and it goes by just...like...that. (I put on a little smooth jazz and crank up the heat - lights out)
